In Mountain View, public safety is the responsibility of two departments, police and fire.
In addition to crime prevention and law enforcement, the police department manages public safety communications, including 9-1-1 services. Police is also the lead department for the city's homeland security preparation.

The fire department manages fire prevention, control and investigation, and also maintains emergency medical response and rescue services. In addition, fire is the lead department for Mountain View's Office of Emergency Services.
